Access Validating Agency (AVA) responsibilities
As an Authorised Validating Agency (AVA), certifying Access to HE Diploma courses, OCNLR leads a regionally-based consortium which includes members from FE and HE Institutions. Under the QAA Recognition Scheme, AVAs have the following specific responsibilities in relation to quality assurance:
- advice and guidance to providers wishing to develop new courses
- validation of courses by a panel which includes HE representation
- moderation arrangements for Access courses
- review and evaluation of Access courses
- collaboration with local HE institutions to ensure the continuing fitness for purpose of recognised programmes

Grading
From 2009/10 QAA has introduced a system of grading which will require each unit achieved at Level 3 within the Access Diploma to be graded as a ‘pass’, ‘merit’ or ‘distinction’. Information on OCNLR Access to HE Diplomas
OCNLR has an online database called APRU which contains all of our approved Access to HE Diplomas and their units. This facility has been developed to support learners, Access to HE providers and admissions officers in Higher Education Institutions.
In addition the London Access to HE Directory contains details of all of the Access to HE Diplomas we validate and is searchable by college and by subject area.
