Schools

With increasing numbers of young learners who are underachieving or disengaged, or whose medical or other needs or level of mobility make it difficult to access learning, plans are underway to reform education and training for young people from the age of 14 with a focus on providing a personalised curriculum for each and every learner at a level appropriate to that learner.

NOCN qualifications are now widely used with learners in both schools and Pupil Referral Units who require a flexible and achievable alternative to more traditional qualifications. Using NOCN qualifications such as Step-UP can support the development of a personalised curriculum for each learner regardless of their expected level of attainment.

Accreditation through approved and transferable national qualifications offers a means of recognising, recording, communicating and celebrating achievement. It can:

  • enhance self-esteem
  • increase motivation
  • communicate attainment and so help progression into further learning, training or employment.

The use of our bite-sized qualifications is already resulting in a distinct improvement in learner motivation and their engagement in school activities. With the option to deliver both skills based and vocational units, schools can build a flexible curriculum that can be delivered in a range of contexts and learners are able to identify their personal interests and strengths for progression to further study. Each unit completed will be accredited and contribute towards a current or future qualification thus motivating them to continue learning.

In addition to eligibility for LA/LSC funding, a number of NOCN qualifications (including Step-UP) also contribute points for Achievement and Attainment Tables. Click here for details of Points Equivalencies.
